General
Information: Sirmaur state was founded by Raja Rasalu. Sirmaur
attained the status of a district, on April 15,1948 when other
hill states were integrated to form Himachal.
NAHAN : 932 m. Nahan a small hill town was founded as a
capital by Raja Karan Prakash in 1621 AD. This well planned town
has a good drainage system having irrigation tanks well designed
to store rainwater. It has small gardens, level roads and a big
ground in its centre. The ground (Chowgan) is the hub of all
social, religious, cultural, recreational and political activities.
A well maintained army cantonment is also located here.
Nahan, situated on an isolated ridge of Shivalik Hills is surrounded
by Pine forests and shrubs. The Sanskrit meaning of Na+Hun is
Invincible. Out of many temples here the famous most is the temple
dedicated to Jagan Nath Ji, the royal deity. Festival of Bawan
Dwadshi is celebrated with great enthusiasm during the end of
the monsoons here. The ceremony is well attended by a large
number of devotees.

Renuka
: Renuka the largest fresh water lake is a sacred place
of pilgrimage as well a picturesque tourist resort. It's shape
resembles a human figure hence symbolises the profile of goddess
Renukaji, mother of Parshuram and wife of Rishi Jamadagni. Every
November a colourful fair is held here in praise of Parshuram.
The largest fresh water lake is getting polluted like other
lakes There is wild-life sanctuary in its vicinity and an animal
safari is also available. |
Saketi
Fossil Park : The Shivalik Fossil Park at Saketi, a small
village 14 km from Nahan is situated on the border of Himachal
and Haryana. It is easily approachable from Chandigarh (72
km) and Ambala (86 km). Built in 1974, it is an attraction
both for scholars and tourists. Due to the efforts of Geological
Survey of India this geological monument has been developed
for educating a common man about the rich heritage and mysteries
of nature. |
Paonta
Sahib : 398 m. Prospering as an
industrial town on the right bank of river Yamuna at a distance
of 45 km from Nahan-Paonta Sahib is sacred town for the Sikhs.
Guru Gobind Singh li, the tenth Guru of Sikhs who stayed here
from 1684 to 1687 AD completed the major portion of the sacred'Dasam
Granth' at this place. A historical gurdwara has been constructed
here on the bank of gently flowing river Yamuna. Thousands
of devotees assemble here to celebrate Holi and Baisakhi festivals.
The two temples, dedicated to Lord Rama and Krishna located
here attract Hindu pilgrims.
The opposite bank of river Yamuna touches the boundary of the
neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh. There is a great demand
for linking this industrial town with a broad gauge railway
line. Dehradun (UP) is very close to Paonta. |
Chaur
Peak (Choor Chandni or Choor Dhar) : 3,647 m. It offers
an unhindered view of wonderful landscape, vast meadows, green
forests, open valleys and distant habitations from the hill
top-a gorgeous pointed peak. There is a Shiva temple and
a Sarai located here. As per local legend it was here in
Choor Dhar that Lord Hanuman found the'Sanjeevani buti'which
was administered to Lakshmana, brother of Lord Rama for his
revival. It is trekkers' dream, The trek leads through forests
ad slush created by gurgling streams. It is easily accessible
from Shimla via Solan-Rajgarh-Nohra near Haripur Dhar or Sainj
near Kotkhai or Tiuni. There is a rest house at Nohra.
Shillai
: Shillai close to the Tons river a tributary of River
Yamuna is famous for local deities Shrigul and Gugga and is
prominent centre of folk culture.

Trilokpur
: Built in 1573 by raja Dip prakash at Trilokpur 23 km from
Nahan thistemple dedicated to Mahamaya Bala Sundariji is considered
a sacred peeth of north India. Thousands of devotees from himachal
and neighbouring states participate inthe annual fairs held
during navaratras in the month of April and October.
