General Information: Hamirpur tehsil of district Kangra was awarded the status of a district in 1972 by the government of Himachal. The place was named 'Hamirpur' after its Raja Hamir Chand belonging to Katoch dynasty that ruled Kangra from 1,700 to 1,747 AD, during the reign of Katoch dynasty in Hamirpur. It has now become one of the biggest market centers of Himachal Pradesh catering to neighboring districts and other areas.  It is well connected with the rest of Himachal Pradesh by a network of roads.

Access: Road 160 km Shimla via Bilaspur, 92 km Dharmsala, 38 km Jwalamukhi, 56 km Deothsidh.

Places of Interest:

Sujanpur 28 km from Hamirpur, situated on the left bank of river Beas, is an important historical town of Himachal. It was chosen and established as the third the last capital by Raja Sansar Chand of Kangra.  He being a great admirer of art and culture encouraged artists from all over the country to this place.  Soon Sujanpur became another centre of attraction after Nadaun and thus Kangra school of Minitiaure painting revived with full gusto. Tihra, at a distance of 3km from Sujanpur on an uphill road is famous for Raja Sansar Chand's Palace a Baradari, a Temple and a 'Talab'.  Temples located in the area bear a marked stamp of Kangra cult of paintings.  Construction of dwelling units during this period was based on the pattern of Delhi and Lahore buildings as their models. A huge water tank in the centre of the building became a star attraction on the festival of Holi when bright colours were added to its waters by the Rulers.
Markand : Markand at a distance of 25 km from Bilaspur via Ghaghas or Brahmpukhar is associated with Rishi Markandya who is learnt to have performed stricktest austerities on his body here. A big fair is held here annually near a tank which is considered sacred and a dip in its holy waters is considered to cure infertility and infant diseases. Narvadeshwara Temple: This temple was got built by  Maharani Prassanni Devi, the wife of Maharaja Sansari Chand. The temple built in open yard in 'Panchayatan style' by the artisans of the darbar is adorned by wall paintings & the scenes of Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagwat Gita.


Murli Manhorhar Temple: In one corner of Chowgan this temple was got built by Maharaja Sansar Chand in 1,785 AD. Constructed in 'Shir Shaili' this is akin to Rajputana Style. Idols of Bhagwan Sri Krishna and Radha alongwith paintings of 'gopis' are the attractions in the temple.

Nadaun: Only 28 km from Hamirpur and 10 km from Jwalamukhi towns, Nadaun is situated on the left bank of river Beas. This beautiful town was developed and chosen Sansar Chand of Kangra as his second capital due to the invasion of Maharaja Ranjit Singh on Kangra.  Raja Sansar Chand not only established himself here in his new palace Amtar but also encouraged artists to settle here to promote Miniature Painting which attained its heights of perfection has a PWD and a Forest rest house. It is also very famous for Mahaseer fishing.

Deoth Sidh:  Deoth-Sidh a famous pilgrim town is 56 km, away from Hamirpur town and only 10 km from Shah-Talai. Dedicated to Child Saint Baba Balaknath a cave temple is located here on a spur of a hill. As the name suggests, Deoth Sidh means 'Light of Truth'. The cave temple always remains lighted.  Women are forbidden to enter the cave and thus pray and make their offerings on the entrance only.

Devi Temple: 1,508 m. Situated on the boundaries of Hamirpur, Kangra and Mandi district and at a distance of 21km from Hamirpur on way to Sarkaghat this 300 years old temple located on a hill top attracts tourists from all over the state. According to an intersting local legend whenever an attempt was made to shift the idol of the Devi from this place people carrying it lost their eyesight which got restored as soon as they installed it back again on the original spot also the local deity respected and worshiped by one and all. During Navaratras and month of Ashadh-big festival is held here.
