National Foundation for Teachers Welfare:-
The National Foundation for Teachers Welfare was set up in 1962 under the Charitable Endowments Act, 1890. The management and administration fo the Foundation is directed by a general committee under the Chairmanship of the Union Minister of Human Resource Development.

Functions:-

The main objective of the Foundation is to provide relief to teachers (and their dependents) who may be in indigent circumstances.

The Foundation celebrates 5th September each years as Teachers Day to mark the birhtday of Late Dr. S Radhakrishnan, former Presidetn, noted educationist and philosopher. A voluntary campaign for the collection fo funds for the welfare of teachers is also undertaken on this day.

Membership:-

All States and Union Territories except Jammu & Kashmir are members of the Foundation. The new state of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh shall soon become a member of the NFTW. Due to the large number of teachers serving in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) the KVS and NVS have also been included as members. At the State, Union Teritory and KVS/NVS level, working committees have been set up for the operation of the Foundation. The Education Ministers and Lt.Governors are the Chairman of the Foundation for their respective States and UTs. For the KVS the commissioner (ex-officio) is the chairman while for NVS it is the Director, NVS.

Funds:-

Funds are made up of a grant from the Government of India and contribution from members (States, UTs, KVS/NVS). When the Foundation was first set up in 1962 the Central Government made an initial contribution of Rs. 1,00,000 to the corpus fund. To this was added an annual contribution of Rs. 25,000 required to be paid by each member to the corpus of the Foundation.
From 1988-89 the annual contribution is based on the teacher population of the State/UT/KVS. A contribution of Rs.25,000 is payable by State/UT whose teacher population is less than exceeds Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 5,000 by those whose teacher population is less than 10,000.

Schemes:-

At the outset it was decided by the general committee of the Foundation that an adequate corpus of funds should first be built up. The interest derived from it could then be used to finance the various welfare schemes so that activities of the NFTW could be sustained over a period of time. A sizabel corpus of Rs. 54.52 crores has been built up over the years (upto March 31, 2003). A sub-committee was constituted by the General Committee to make recommendation for utilization of the funds of the corpus money of the Foundation for the benefit of teachers and their dependents. The sub-committe recommended the introduction of the following schemes on an experimental basis:

  • Grant of financial assistance for construction of Shikshak Sadans.
  • Paid holiday to eminent teachers who have rendered meritorious service.
  • Gratuitous relief to teachers in case of serious accidents.
  • Subsidy for academic activity of teachers.

Financial Assistance for construction of Shikshak Sadan:-

Proposals are considered from States/UTs for grant of financial assistance for construction of 10/20 room Shikshak Sadans in places of historical cultural and tourist importance. The minimum rent chargeable from the teachers at these Shikshak Sadans is Rs. 25 per day. The objective of the scheme is to enable the teachers from different parts of the country to visit these places at nominal cost, and spend their leisure in a meaningful manner while simultaneously promoting national integration.

Proposals should contain the following:-

  1. Plan with detailed estimates.
  2. Undertaking from the concerned State Working Committee that the facility of the Shikshak Sadan will be made availabe to teachers from other States/UTs/KVs, and that the rent chargeabel from them will not exceed Rs. 25 per day.
