Ever since its inception in 1956 the college has experienced a phenomenal growth. This college which started imparting pre-service and in-service education has a very limited jurisdiction and objective to begin with. With the establishment of Extension Service Department in September 1962 by NCERT the college began to grow in stature. The field area of the institution earlier limited only to the north zonal districts of the state was now extended to include the whole districts of Chamba, Hamirpur, Kangra and Una and all the categories of teachers- Primary, Middle, High and Secondary Education NCTE upgraded it in 1994 to CTE.

OLD STUDENTS :
This institution can boast of contributing men of exceptional ability to man various fields viz administration, defence, education, Police etc. Sh. I. D. Diman, ex-student of this college earned distinction as Education Minister of Himachal Pradesh. It is under his kind & able guidance new height has been achieved in the field of Education. Sh. Chander Kumar Ex- Minister of Public Health & Irrigation was also the student of this college. About 50% of Headmasters & Principals working in the various schools of Himachal Pradesh had received their education from this institution of excellence.

COURSES TAUGHT : This college caters for the teacher's training. The pupil teachers come from various parts of Himachal Pradesh. It has a strength of 245 students :-

It also provides training to TGT's School Lectures, Principals & Headmasters through seminars. In addition it provides Resource Persons for contact programmes for B.Ed. & M.Ed. organized by H.P. University, Shimla for correspondence students.
